Caballo de Piedra, Carretera a San miguel, Guatemala
El Caballo de Piedra
Hernán Cortés' Horse, this song is heard in lakeside towns like San Miguel and Santa Elena. It is said that during the Conquest of Mexico and Guatemala, when Hernán Cortés was heading to Honduras on his expedition and passed along the shores of Lake Petén Itzá, he left an injured horse for the Itza of the Lordship of King Canek. However, when they tried to transport it from the tip of Nij Tum near San Andrés to Flores Island, the raft they were carrying it on overturned, and the horse fell into the water and ended up standing at the bottom of the lake.
The locals say the horse is still there, in front of Tayasal, that is, in front of Flores Island, and can be seen on clear mornings. The boatmen of San Benito say they've heard the horse's neighing on the nights of Saint John's Day and that its footsteps can be heard at the bottom of the lake.
A stone replica of what the Stone Horse once was has been created in San Miguel.
